National Grilled Cheese Day Today

This year, National Grilled Cheese Day has arrived on Thursday and people everywhere are celebrating by making their favorite sandwich.

The iconic bread-butter-cheese sandwich is actually honored all month long, as April is National Grilled Cheese Month, but the holiday on April 12 especially salutes the dish.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are one of America's most popular cheesy meals. Usually comprised of one or more slices of any kind of bread and any sort of cheese, the sandwich may also include meat, lettuce, tomato, pickles, or condiments- ketchup and mustard are both popular. They are also referred to as toasted cheese or a cheese toastie sandwich.

While their origin is unknown, the classic comfort food has attracted millions of fans, and even has an entire festival dedicated to it. The Grilled Cheese Invitational will hold its 10th annual competition in Pasadena, Calif. later this month.

On the competition's official site, the event is "the original, the biggest, the best, the cheesiest," and invites fans to join the cooking contest. All sandwiches that enter the competition must remain 60 percent cheese, but the event has seen unique ingredients paired with cheese, butter, and bread.

National Grilled Cheese Day tweets have flooded Twitter Thursday, with the holiday becoming a trending topic on the social media site. Users are sharing how they are celebrating the event.

"It's National Grilled Cheese Day," wrote Mike. "I think I'll make mine with 5 different cheeses, and of course, bacon… I hear myself getting fatter."

Ike joked, "I forget are the banks closed on National Grilled Cheese Day?"

Many restaurants are offering customers deals on sandwiches on the holiday. Cheesie's Pub & Grub from Chicago posted, "Happy National Grilled Cheese Day! Enjoy 25% off all of our sandwiches all day until midnight. Stay cheesie!!"

April also saw the celebration of another popular sandwich, as April 2 was National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day.
