With identity theft at an all-time high today, National Honesty Day could not come at a better time. Approximately 16 million U.S. residents have their identities used fraudulently each year, with financial losses totaling over $50 billion, according to dailyfinance.com.

Meanwhile, National Honesty Day is believed to have started in the early 1990's by a former press secretary to a governor of Maryland and the author of five book, M. Hirsh Goldberg. The writer decided that the month of April should end on a higher moral note since it begins with April Fool's Day on April 1. While the holiday is referred to a "National" day, it has not received recognition from Congress or the President.

As a reminder for how lies can effect your life, the 2009 film "The Invention of Lying" follows one man who lives in a world where no one has ever lied before. However, when he begins lying for personal gain, he ends up losing everything. The film stars Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill and Louis C.K., among others.

Other observers of National Honesty Day are taking to Twitter with their celebrations, including Faithful and Saved who wrote, "Let's talk about Jesus. Because He is the way, the TRUTH, and the life #NationalHonestyDay."

Patrick added, "#NationalHonestyDay, shouldn't this be everyday?"
