Nevada Motel Captive Freed After 6 Month Confinement, Used Facebook to Alert Family
A woman held captive at a Nevada hotel was freed after family members saw a Facebook post the woman managed to send.
The victim, 26-year-old Sheena Herschbach, was reportedly held captive by 34-year-old Jason Greniger, who allegedly threatened to kill her and several members of her family if she tried to escape.
Greniger was arrested on Saturday at the MV Motel in Mesquite, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, Detective Sergeant MaQuade Chesley, a spokesman for the Mesquite Police Department, revealed.
According to authorities, the victim had not been physically restrained by Greniger, but was too afraid to leave due to his continuous threats.
"He thought we were together," Herschbach told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "If I said anything, he threatened to hurt me, so I didn't for a long time."
Police reveal that Herschbach would be sent to the store to gather certain items but she was too overcome with fear to try to escape.
"She had opportunities to contact police, it just took her six months to get the courage to do it," Chesley said. "She legitimately believed that he would kill her, hurt her or hurt her family if she didn't stay with him."
Herschbach was able to send the Facebook post that alerted police to her situation after using a computer at a local public library.
"I just want to let every one know I'm sarry I whant to come home but he wont let me yes Jason don't knoe im online in mesquet novata at the mv motel," read the Facebook post.
The post was shown to Mesquite Police by a friend of Herschbach, the Las Vegas Sun reported.
In addition to be charged with second-degree kidnapping, Greniger is also being held on an outstanding warrant stemming from a first degree felony charge in Minnesota, Chesley added.
Greniger is currently being held in Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas with a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday. Greniger could face a possible sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a $15,000 fine. Court officials said it was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
