New App Lets Mobile Users Have iPhone X's FaceID-Like Feature For Free
When Apple unveiled its new flagship phone last week, one of the highlights was its FaceID 3D face authentication feature. Now, Android and Apple users do not need to shell out $999 for an iPhone X because of a free app called ZoOm Login, which uses a piece of software and a mobile device's front camera to authenticate the user and unlock the gadget.
In the new iPhone X, the FaceID system serves to let the phone owner's face act as the "password" of the handset. Once the device recognizes the face of the owner, it automatically unlocks itself.
While the FaceID feature of the iPhone X is a first for any smartphone, a new app now also allows Android and other iOS devices to have a similar type of technology for free.
This app is called ZoOm Login and it uses TrueLiveness technology to validate a phone user's identity via 3D data. This data is obtained with the help of the smartphone's front camera in place of the special 3D cameras that the iPhone X has. Just like the iPhone X's FaceID, however, what it basically does is it scans the face of the phone user and authenticates his/her identity before unlocking the device.
In an email sent to the International Business Times, FaceTec CEO Kevin Alan Tussy said: "Software is the only realistic way to add biometric security to every smart device in the world. While hardware makers will always tout the latest bells and whistles to sell new phones, app publishers have different requirements and universal access is at the top of that list."
"Apple wants you to think you need a $1000 phone to be secure but, with ZoOm, every smart device can have 3D face authentication. ZoOm enables the deployment of strong biometric security across the entire mobile user base, regardless of the devices customers own," he added.
The app can be downloaded from Apple's App Store and Google Play.
