New 'Dark Knight Rises' Trailer Released, New Details Revealed (VIDEO)
An IMAX-quality trailer was released Tuesday for The Dark Knight Rises, the last movie in director Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed Batman trilogy.
Set eight years after the events in The Dark Knight, the trailer opens with a haunting rendition of the national anthem sung by a young boy. His small voice sets a dark tone for the film, as the chants of newly escaped prisoners are slowly heard to rise above the song.
The second trailer for The Dark Knight Rises again leads with the tagline, “The legend ends.” This phrase, along with the image of the broken Batman mask, implies the possible death of billionaire Bruce Wayne, who is played by English actor Christian Bale.
Other key aspects of the trailer include peeks into the cast, most notably: Commissioner James Gordon (Gary Oldman), Selina Kyle, who doubles as the anti-hero Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), and villain Bane (Tom Hardy).
The plot, though still intentionally vague right now, consists of several known points. In the trailer, we are told that the city of Gotham has entered an era of “peace time,” which will be followed by inevitable chaos.
Selina Kyle says to Bruce Wayne, “You think this can last. There’s a storm coming, Mr. Wayne.”
Invoking some of the language of the Occupy movement, Kyle continues her dire warning: “You and your friends better batten down the hatches. ‘Cause when it hits, you’re all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.”
The “storm” Kyle speaks of is none other than Bane, the film’s sinister answer to Batman’s heroic nature. The trailer gives viewers a glimpse of the madman’s terrorist nature, as he is seen blowing up a football stadium, and freeing Gotham’s most dangerous criminals in a display of anarchy.
Then, standing above a battered Bruce Wayne, Bane tells him, “When Gotham is ashes, you have my permission to die.”
The internet has been set abuzz by the release of the second trailer in the series, with Twitter reactions like, “Wow,” from Nikki Sabale (@nikkisabale) and “Exactly eight months to go now for The Dark Knight Rises. *rewatches awesome trailer*” from Rohan Joshi (@mojorojo).
