New Kurt Cobain Album Coming Out Later This Year

Prior to the premiere of the documentary "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck" on HBO, the documentary's director Brett Morgen revealed that a new Kurt Cobain album will be released later this year. Morgen said in an interview that the new album will not be what people will expect.

He told The Huffington Post "will feel like you're kind of hanging out with Kurt Cobain on a hot summer day in Olympia, Washington as he fiddles about. It's going to really surprise people."

The new album is said to be a compilation of songs from a recently discovered stash of previously recorded music that Morgen reportedly found in Cobain's storage facility. He discovered 107 cassettes with 200 hours of recorded music which has not been heard before. Morgen apparently had full access to Cobain's personal life while he was working on the documentary and he was able to "sift through boxes of home videos and cassettes."

He also clarified that the new album is not a Nirvana album, but an album of just Kurt Cobain. When asked to describe the kind of material he found, he told The Independent that it consisted of Beatles covers, jam sessions with Courtney Love and other musician friends. Some tracks were said to have never been heard by Love before. One of these tracks was a 12-minute acoustic track that was already featured in the documentary.

The documentary premiered on HBO on May 4 and was executive produced by Cobain's daughter, Frances Bean. It is the "first official authorized look at the troubled Nirvana frontman's life." According to The Huffington Post, the documentary is said to "take a deep dive" into the personal life of Cobain, "revealing secrets even the biggest Nirvana fans don't know about."
