New Orleans Saints Cornerback Delvin Breaux Suffers Setback in Practice, May Be Out for the Season
The New Orleans Saints fans who have been waiting to see if cornerback Delvin Breaux can return to his 2015 season form will have to wait longer because the New Orleans native's status for the rest of the year is currently in doubt.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Breaux has suffered an unspecified setback during Thursday's practice and he's expected to miss three to six weeks of action while he recovers.
This is a huge blow for the New Orleans native because the 2017 National Football League (NFL) season has already reached the halfway mark, and the Saints will have to decide whether to activate him or not.
Breaux is eligible to return to the field this week after he spent the first eight weeks of the season on the injured reserve list due to a broken fibula. However, he didn't play in Sunday's game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"His recovery time is expected to be three to six weeks, but Breaux would have to be designated to return from IR within the next 21 days," Jeremy Bergman said in his report for NFL.com.
"This would be a massive setback for the ascendant corner, who was originally slated to miss only four to six weeks. Breaux's injury was originally diagnosed as a contusion in August before he got a second opinion; two team orthopedists were promptly fired. Breaux missed 10 games last season with shoulder and leg injuries. The corner is an unrestricted free agent in 2018," he continued.
Breaux has shown a lot of potential in his first season with the team, but he has missed multiple games since then due to injuries. Now he may have to sit out the entire 2017 season.
Fortunately, the Saints have a lot of depth at cornerback, so they will be fine even if Breaux is done for the year.
Rookie Marshon Lattimore and second-year pro Ken Crawley should continue to start at cornerback for the Saints.
