New Orleans Saints NFL Trade and Roster Rumors: Adrian Peterson Still an Option for Saints

Adrian Peterson might have left New Orleans without a contract in hand last week, but a potential move is still possible.

According to The Advocate.com's Nick Underhill, Peterson remains an option for the Saints and they are still interested in signing the veteran running back.

"It's not clear if the two sides ever discussed money, but when that hurdle arrives, it's going to be interesting to see what happens. New Orleans might not want to go above — or even match — the $3.7 million Mark Ingram is scheduled to take home this season in an offer to Peterson," Underhill said in his report.

"It's odd to speak of him in these terms since he's one of the best players of his generation, but if he were to sign in New Orleans, Peterson likely would serve as a backup," he continued.

ESPN's Ed Werder has also reported that the Saints want to sign Peterson before the draft later this month if the money is right.

Well, it seems the Saints are seriously considering signing him if he's willing to take less money. It will be interesting to see him as a backup for Mark Ingram. However, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport said Peterson's search for a new team is going to continue for now because he's not expected to sign a deal prior to the draft.

Actually, that makes sense. There are a lot of talented running back prospects in this year's draft class and the smart thing to do here is to check them out first. Peterson may have the name recognition, but he is not getting any younger and he is also coming off another serious knee injury. Why settle for a running back who's at the tail-end of his career when there are promising young prospects available?

Peterson will eventually find a team to play for next season, but he will have to be patient.
