New 'Star Trek Into Darkness ' Trailer: Sequel Better Than First? [WATCH]
The new 'Star Trek into Darkness' trailer hints that the sequel might be better than the first run of destruction surrounding the Enterprise. As predicted, Benedict Cumberbatch plays the villain Khan Noonien Singh in the second Star Trek film which features Chris Pine as Captain Kirk.
An extended version of the 'Star Trek Into Darkness' trailer sequel will also be shown for nine minutes before the 'The Hobbit: An Une'xpected Journey' in select IMAX theaters.
The Star Trek trailer begins with what is assumed to be Cumberbatch's voice in which he announces Khan's forthcoming wrath.
"You think your world is safe. It is an illusion. A comforting lie told to protect you," says Khan, as images of a futuristic-looking San Francisco flash before the screen.
"Enjoy these final moments of peace for I have returned to have my vengeance. "
What follows in the teaser trailer for the sequel are flash images of mass destruction and a lot of stunned faces. There is a fiery lake of some sort, a huge spacecraft emerging from the water, explosions inside a space ship, a blond letting out a prolonged scream, and one distraught face after another.
At the end of the vignette, Khan says, "So, Shall we begin?"
A few more images of destruction and a crash flash. Then the words "Into Darkness" fade in from the dark background.
The official plot of 'Star Trek Into Darkness' states: "When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction."
The movie will star many A-list actors including, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana.
Just days before the trailer was released, a new Star Trek poster showed Cumberbatch standing atop a pile of ruin as he marvels at a crumbling city. The poster resembled the marketing materials for "The Dark Knight Rises," which also cast off a dark and ominous vibe.
'Star Trek Into Darkness,' directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Paramount Pictures, will hit theaters May 17, 2013.
