New 'The Matrix' Movie: Writer Zak Penn Clarifies Rumors After Keanu Reeves Talks About Project at NYCC
A new "The Matrix" movie is reportedly in the works to relaunch or reboot the cult-favorite franchise, but Keanu Reeves, who starred in the science-fiction film, is not on board with the idea.
When asked about the project at the New York Comic Con (NYCC), the actor, per IGN, appears to have agreed with the audience, who jeered upon the idea.
Remaking "The Matrix." I don't know. Maybe it's... I don't know anything about it.
Early this year, Reeves emphasized that if he was going to make a new "The Matrix" movie, it has to be written and directed by the Wachowskis, the genius duo behind the original. For this upcoming project, however, they are not involved.
In light of this, Zak Penn, the man currently working on a script for this new "The Matrix" movie, took to Twitter to offer an explanation on the development being done on the project, clarifying that it is neither a reboot nor a continuation.
Watch Animatrix, read comics to see what Wachowskis did. A script in development is not a movie. No casting, director, style can be discussed yet. Nothing to see here folks ... yet. No need to put actors or anyone on the spot, because there's nothing there yet. No reboot or reimagining, no recasting involved. And this is not the point in process that those decisions get made. So many hoops to jump through, the first one I gotta do myself.
That being said, not much can be said about the return of "The Matrix" to the big screen just yet since Penn appears to have a different approach.
His mention of "Animatrix," which was a series of short animated films that explored the backstory of "The Matrix" universe, suggested that he is looking to delve into its mythology of the franchise where he can pull new stories and characters from.
Unfortunately, Slash Film believes that while Penn notes it is far from a reboot or continuation, this "The Matrix" movie is going to get called that either way when it releases so it will be interesting to see where this goes.
