New Video Argues Traditional Marriage Equals Biology, Not Bigotry

Is it fair for the government to promote natural marriage but not same-sex marriage? Isn't this discrimination against homosexuals? What about equality? These questions are addressed in a new video ad by the National Organization for Marriage.

The conservative marriage group released the video, titled "Marriage = Biology (Not Bigotry)," on Monday, weeks ahead of the November elections when voters in four states will vote on whether to redefine marriage.

The video ad makes the argument that governments do not promote marriage between one man and one woman just because two people love each other, but for "the perpetuation and stabilization of society."

"But do we really have any compelling reason to maintain such a narrow definition or has the time come for the government to revise and expand our understanding of marriage to include same-sex couples?" the video asks.

It then compares the benefits of natural marriage with that of same-sex marriage.

Natural marriages create children, best raises children, protects women, civilizes men, and lowers crime, poverty and welfare – which reduces government spending and deficits, the NOM video argues.

What benefits does same-sex marriage provide? None, it maintains as cricket sounds are heard in the video.

"In fact, it hurts us. Promoting same-sex marriage changes the purpose of the civil institution of marriage. Natural marriage centers on bringing up the next generation and raising children to become good citizens. Same-sex marriage merely validates sex partners.

"We know statistically that natural marriage creates the best possible family for children. If we alter the primary purpose of marriage, the losers will be the children."

Natural marriages that don't create children are "the exception" and "not the rule," the video adds.

Additionally, wherever same-sex marriage is promoted, students are subject to mandatory homosexual curricula, businesses and taxes fund homosexual relationships, freedom of speech is gagged and religious freedom is overruled, it argues.

"The government has no compelling interest in legally promoting same-sex marriage. None."

What about equality?

The video argues: the law already treats everyone equally.

"The law treats all people the same but it doesn't treat all behaviors the same. Same-sex marriage and natural marriage are different behaviors with different outcomes. So the law rightfully treats them differently."

This doesn't constitute discrimination against homosexuals, it adds. "This discriminates against behaviors, not people."

"For example, are you being discriminated against when the government promotes police work but you never become a police officer? No. Not at all. We all benefit when police work is encouraged.

"In the same way, people who don't marry someone of the opposite sex are not discriminated against when our government promotes natural marriage."

What about tolerance?

"Yes. Same-sex advocates need to be more tolerant," the video argues. "Homosexual relationships are already tolerated in the U.S. They can already commit themselves to each other until death do them part without government endorsement.

"But only the union of one man and one woman should be promoted because it alone is the foundation of a civilized society.

"That's not bigotry. That's biology."

Voters in Washington State, Minnesota, Maryland and Maine will vote in November on whether to protect traditional marriage or allow same-sex couples to get married.
