New York Giants NFL Trade Rumors: Robbie Gould to Test Free Agent Market

Looks like placekicker Robbie Gould is going to test the market as a free agent after spending one season with the New York Giants.

ESPN's Jordan Raanan has reported that the 35-year-old veteran has opted to become a free agent and this leaves the team without a proven kicker. Right now, Adrick Rosas is the only kicker on their roster and he is an untested prospect who signed with the team during the offseason. With Gould gone, the Giants will have to add another kicker via free agency or the draft.

Ed Valentine of Big Blue View has pointed out that Nick Folk, Steven Hauschka and Greg Zuerlein are available on the market, so perhaps the Giants can sign one of them. He also believes Zane Gonzalez is an option if they plan to draft a kicker.

Gould was the Chicago Bears most successful kicker, but in a move that surprised many, the team decided to release him before the start of last season. After spending 11 seasons with the Bears, he joined the Giants midway through the 2016 season after Josh Brown was released when his admission of domestic violence became public.

Gould converted all 10 of his field goal attempts last season and he also made 20 of 23 in extra points.

"It's no surprise the 12-year veteran wants to explore his options in free agency. Though his 10 field goal attempts in 2016 were a career low, there's something to be said for his efficiency. With the recent rule changes to move the extra point back to the 15 yard-line kickers have become more valuable than ever in today's NFL," Jack Aylmer of Elite Sports NY said in his report.

Gould is a career 85.9 percent kicker and he earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2006. During that season, he was also named an All-Pro after he made 89 percent of his kicks.
