New York Jets Linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin Expected to Undergo Back Surgery, Likely Out for the Season
Lorenzo Mauldin's season is likely over.
The outside linebacker is currently on the New York Jets' injured reserve list after he hurt his back in training camp, but he probably won't be returning this season because the doctors have told him he may have to undergo season-ending surgery to fix a herniated disk in his back. Mauldin is seeking a second opinion, but it doesn't look good for the third-year pro.
The New York Post was the first to report the news.
"They're recommending surgery, so he has to get a second opinion and we'll go from there, but his back got significantly worse," Jets head coach Todd Bowles said last Thursday, via the Associated Press. "It got better at times. It was up and down with him and it took a turn for the worse," he added.
The Jets had high hopes for Mauldin when they selected him in the third round of the 2015 draft, but he struggled to stay healthy in his three seasons with the team and he failed to live up to expectations.
"Mauldin has not developed the way the Jets have hoped he would. He was unable to claim a full-time role a year ago, and this injury puts him even further back. At this point, it would be a major surprise if he is able to earn a second contract," John G. Butchko said in his column for Gang Green Nation.
The former University of Louisville standout was supposed to compete for the starting job at outside linebacker this offseason. Unfortunately, he missed training camp and the preseason.
He also had to deal with some off-field issues this offseason. Mauldin was charged with misdemeanor assault in June because of his role in an incident at a New York nightspot last April, and the alleged victim is suing him. When he makes his return next season, he may have to face league discipline.
