New York Jets NFL Trade Rumors: Jay Cutler an Option at Quarterback for Jets
With Mike Glennon, Tyrod Taylor, Nick Foles, Matt Barkley and Brian Hoyer already off the market, the New York Jets don't really have many attractive options left.
Right now, Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick are still available, but they didn't really play that well with the Jets last season. AJ McCarron's name has come up as well in trade rumors and acquiring him is a possibility. Colin Kaepernick, Robert Griffin III, Josh McCown and Chase Daniel are also available. But before the Jets consider any of those options, they are going to do their due diligence and see if a certain quarterback is the right fit for the team.
Citing a source, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport said the Jets have made contact with Jay Cutler and he's expected the visit the team sometime in the future. Well, he is definitely an interesting option. Unlike the other choices, Cutler does have years of experience as a starting quarterback and he is by far the most talented option available on the free agent market.
Last week, Rapoport also reported that there was mutual interest between the quarterback and the Jets. However, he noted that the team still have to decide if signing Cutler is a good idea.
"At this point it's really a matter of fit. There are a couple questions the Jets have to ask themselves: Is Jay Cutler the kind of quarterback that you want in your quarterback room? They have a couple young guys who they'd like to bring along — Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty. Jay Cutler does not always have the greatest reputation for dealing with teammates, whether or not that is reality we're not exactly sure," Rapoport said in the report.
Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg are not ready to start, so Cutler will likely get the starting job if the Jets sign him.
