New York Schools Close, Transportation Affected on Tuesday; Authorities Declare State of Emergency Amid Winter Snow Storm
Schools will have to close down while a large part of public and air transport have been affected, as local government authorities declared a state of emergency in New York on Tuesday in preparation for the havoc of winter storm Stella.
According to weather forecasts, winter storm Stella will cause a severe blizzard that will bring as much as 20 inches of snow in New York City - enough reason to cancel school classes on Tuesday, March 14.
Apart from New York City's public schools, Patch.com includes a list of schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island areas that have also canceled class schedules amid the winter storm. These include major universities in the state such as Columbia University and the New York University.
Apart from regular school classes, it has also been reported that after-school programs, Young Adult Borough Centers programs, and activities under the Public Schools Athletic League have also been canceled following the snowstorm forecast.
On the other hand, late Monday night, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed the public as he declared a state of emergency in preparation for the immense blizzard. He warned everyone (via New York Daily News): "This should be a very serious blizzard, one that everyone should take seriously. The best thing to do is stay in if you can stay in."
In terms of public transport, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo reportedly expressed that shutting down the entire Metropolitan Transportation Authority railway system would be the last option. Cuomo earlier explained, via the same New York Daily News report: "That is the last to continue to operate. Given the severity of the storm, anything can happen, but we don't plan on any closure of the underground subway at this point."
However, the authorities have already decided to close above-ground stations on Tuesday.
According to CBS New York, the MTA bus service will continue amid snowstorm Stella, however, its operation will be reduced by 30 percent.
Meanwhile, as for air travel, airline companies such as American Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines have already canceled all flights to and from New York.
