New York Yankees Interested in Nick Ahmed?
With Didi Gregorius expected to miss the first month of the season because of a shoulder injury, the New York Yankees will have to look for a replacement at shortstop.
Of course, the club can always use one of the players on their roster as a temporary replacement, but Anthony Rieber of Newday has reported that the team is open to trading for a "short-term" answer. Well, it seems that one of the available shortstops in the trade market may have caught their attention.
According to the AZCentral's Nick Piecoro, the Yankees are among the teams interested in acquiring Arizona Diamondbacks' Nick Ahmed.
Trading for a temporary solution seems unusual for a team that already has several players who can fill in at short. Top prospect Tyler Wade can do the job until Gregorius gets back. Ronald Torreyes, Ruben Tejada, Pete Kozma and Starlin Castro are potential candidates as well. So, why trade for a shortstop when they already have players who can fill in temporarily?
"When Gregorius returns, he'll get his job back. Do the Yankees bring in somebody more established to play essentially one month, if Gregorius is expected back by early-ish May? Or do they grit their teeth and go with what they've got?," NJ Advance Media's Brendan Kuty said in his report.
However, ESPN's Tim Kurkjian seems to like the idea of the Yankees acquiring Ahmed.
"He's a great defensive shortstop and with the other middle infielders they have on that team, there's a real question of how much he's going to play for the Diamondbacks. I think it makes all the sense in the world," Kurkjian stated on the Baseball Tonight with Buster Olney Show. "I don't know how much it's going to cost to get him," he added.
Zack Cozart and Jose Iglesias are also potential replacements, but the New York Post's George A. King III said the Yankees are not interested in both of them.
