New York Yankees MLB Trade Rumors: Rob Refsnyder Is Available for Trade
Rob Refsnyder is definitely a versatile player. Unfortunately, he just doesn't really have a clear role with the New York Yankees and that has made him expendable.
According to George A. King III of the New York Post, the Yankees have informed other teams that they are willing to listen to offers for the utility man. Refsnyder has started at first base, second base, third base and the outfield for the team. However, he was never a regular starter at those positions and he hasn't played much for the Yankees in the past two seasons (only 74 games).
"Originally thought to be the primary backup for Greg Bird at first base for this year, that went to pieces the moment that the Yanks signed Chris Carter. The team has more outfielders than they can handle right now and, with Starlin Castro locked in at second base and Chase Headley at third, Refsnyder not only is expendable, he's getting in the way," Steve Contursi of Yanks Go Yard said in his piece.
Refsnyder should have the opportunity to show what he can do if he is trade. Refsnyder will turn 26 later this month and he posted a batting average of 0.250, an on-base percentage of 0.328 and a slugging percentage of 0.309 in 58 games last season. He also had 12 runs batted in and nine doubles in 175 plate appearances.
He played much better in the minor leagues. Matt Snyder of CBS Sports points out that Refsnyder is actually a career .290/.369/.419 hitter in Triple-A, so he does have potential. However, his lack of power is noticeable. He doesn't have a single home run in the big leagues last season and he only had two home runs during the 2015 season.
Refsnyder is still in his pre-arbitration years, and he also has one minor league option remaining.
