New York Yankees Season Ends With 3-2 Loss to Tigers
The New York Yankees season has come to an end as they were mercilessly discarded by the Tigers in a 3-2 loss in ALDS Game 5 Thursday night.
The Yankees had held high hopes of going for another World Series this year, but that dream will have to wait another year now as they came up short when it mattered most.
The Tigers now progress and will meet the Texas Rangers in the ALCS following their winner-takes-all finale with the Yankees.
Alex Rodriguez cut a solemn figure as he struck out for the final out in the ninth.
The Yankees were always chasing the game, giving the home fans little to cheer from the offset, as the Tigers hit back-to-back first inning solo homers off starting pitcher Ivan Nova to take a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers pulled further ahead in the fifth when Victor Martinez hit a single to center field.
The Yankees to their credit did not give up hope, and a Robinson Cano homer in the fifth and a walked run in the seventh ensured a nail-biting final few innings with the scores at 3-2. However, any hopes were dashed as the Yankees ultimately came up short.
The Tigers have pitcher Doug Fister to thank; as he lasted five innings and gave out only one run. Max Scherzer, Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde saw out the game.
Prior to Thursday night’s defeat, the Yankees had reached the AL championship for two-years running. However, instead of making it three years in-a-row, the Tigers instead get their first ALCS since 2006. That year the Tigers went on to win the pennant but lost in the World Series.
