New 'Zelda' Game in Development, Producer Confirms

There's a new "Legend of Zelda" game in the works. Following the worldwide success of "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," series producer Eiji Aonuma confirmed via the game's artbook that his team is already hard at work at the next title.

An entry in the "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Master Works," the game's official artbook, revealed that Aonuma and his crew have already started developing a new "Zelda" game according to Game Informer.

There are no details beyond that note, but the immediate follow-up to the game that helped carry the Nintendo Switch to its successful launch is to be expected. After all, Aonoma and Nintendo have always dutifully worked on new "Zelda" games as soon as the current one is finished.

"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" itself was already in development when the earlier "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword" launched in 2011. This came just in time, too, as the new game took years to complete, with Aonuma still working on the game's basic gameplay elements as late as the January 2013 Nintendo Direct event.

An earlier interview with Nintendo producer and director Shigeru Miyamoto at this year's E3 convention also revealed how the company is planning to ramp up the development of new games — not just of "Zelda" sequels. Hopefully, this will include the shortening of the usual four to six-year gaps between titles.

A new "Zelda" title coming out soon can only benefit Nintendo, especially since "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" is still the company's best selling game on the Nintendo Switch, as Gamespot points out.

So far, the game has sold 4.7 million copies as of Nintendo's latest tally, and most of that also went into pushing out part of the 10 million Switch sales when it was bundled with the console.
