News Corp. Gay Marriage Magazine Shows 'Greed is God?'
News Corporation, owned by Rupert Murdoch, has been noted over the years for taking a decidedly conservative approach to the issue of gay marriage, so gay activists and conservatives have expressed surprise that the company has produced a new magazine covering homosexual marriage and have been wondering if greed may be at play.
The September 29 release of the magazine, WEDDING Pride, has been strongly criticized by both gay marriage supporters, who believe this is nothing more than a move motivated by monetary gains, and conservatives troubled by what the magazine means for the future of conservative-leaning News Corp. and Fox News.
Bridgette P. LaVictoire wrote, "This [WEDDING Pride] just shows that, if Rupert Murdoch could make a buck digging up his late mother and selling her as a road side attraction, he would," on LezGetReal, A Gay Girl’s View on The World.
"News Corp. shows that Greed is God every day," she added.
Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth about Homosexuality said the company was promoting “bad morality,” LifeSiteNews wrote.
"Conservative and faith-based Americans do not look to Fox to promote sin," he said. "And yet, every time Fox promotes homosexuality, that's exactly what they’re doing; they’re promoting bad morality."
The company is being slammed by gay marriage supporters in part for an editorial printed in the New York Post, a newspaper owned by Murdoch's News Corporation.
The June 14 editorial said, "There is no denying that same-sex marriage could become law this year. This reflects a seismic shift in society's attitudes on the issue and a growing acceptance of gays in general. Still, the question is vexing. But if we had a vote, it would be no. Marriage as an institution has fallen on hard times in recent years. But that's no excuse for weakening it further."
The Post has been known to publish anti-gay views and to have another paper owned by News Corp., CNG Publications, publish a magazine promoting gay marriage is viewed by many as an oxymoron.
"While the hacks over at FOX News are busy attacking everything in sight with regards to same-sex marriage, News Corp smells profits," LaVictoire said.
WEDDING Pride will be a glossy, high-end publication and feature "editorial content that celebrates the Gay Community and its recent achievement." The magazine will have an initial distribution of 35,000 in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut LifeSiteNews reported.
WEDDING Pride advertisement prices range from $850 for a quarter page to $3,120 for a back cover.
"It has come to my attention that News Corp, parent company to virulently homophobic Fox News and NY Post doesn't apparently hate the gays enough to not make a buck off them, if the opportunity presents itself," said Clarknt67 of the magazine on the liberal blog, Daily Kos.
LaBarbera told LifeSiteNews that he is concerned that Fox News might "go neutral" on social issues.
"People expect Fox to avoid the typical liberal media bias on issues like homosexuality," he said. "Already, Fox supports the NLGJA, and frequent Fox Bill O’Reilly guest Margaret Hoover is a strong advocate for homosexual 'marriage.'"
He added, "We certainly hope that News Corporation's support of homosexual 'marriage' does not presage a tilt by Fox News in that direction."
The Christian Post contacted Fox News, but the call was not returned by press time.
