Newt Gingrich Getting Direct in 'Positive Campaign'
With less than a week before the Iowa caucuses Newt Gingrich, the former onetime polling frontrunner, is trying to use his “Positive Campaign” as a way to distance him from the other GOP candidates but, negative ads from his opponents has Gingrich using not so positive rhetoric.
During the past week the GOP presidential candidate said he was going to run "relentlessly positive campaign," and has told supporters that he would reject any outside groups who produce negative ads in support of him.
“Iowa has an opportunity to say to the rest of the country, the era of the negative consultant running false ads is over,” Gingrich said according to KIMT. “I would ask you when you go to the caucus to remind your friends and neighbors, ‘do you really want to reward somebody who's done nothing but run negative ads?’”
Iowa Republicans, however, are receiving a not so positive brochure from a pro-Gingrich group in their mailboxes. The brochure, published by Strong America Now, describes former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, one of Gingrich’s opponents, as "the second most dangerous man in America" and also warning voters to “Don’t let Romney backers mislead you!" according to WXIN.
Gingrich who lately has been the model of positivity is cranking up his message and becoming much more direct in the verbiage that he is using to describe is GOP opponents. Earlier in the week Gingrich characterized Romney as a "Massachusetts moderate" who is not "man enough" to take responsibility.
He went after Ron Paul's views as "totally outside the mainstream of virtually every decent American." Gingrich however, still maintains that he is running a positive campaign.
“You want to elect somebody who has big positive solutions, runs positive ads, and has a track record of actually getting it done,” Gingrich said.
According to WXIN when Gingrich was asked by reporters Wednesday whether it is hypocritical to attack Paul while insisting that he is running a positive campaign Gingrich said, "You can fight in a positive way. It's good for America to see someone fight in a positive way and not degenerate into the kind of junk you've seen on TV recently."
