NFL Free Agency Rumors 2016: Green Bay Packers Win Jared Cook Sweepstakes

The Green Bay Packers made a significant move in free agency by announcing that they have signed veteran tight end Jared Cook to a one year deal that's reportedly worth $3.6 million. This development could mean an intriguing roster storyline for the Packers, who still have Richard Rogers to rely on.

According to NFL.com, the likely reason why the Packers decided to add someone like Cook was to boost the team's chances of opening up the middle of the field. This job was supposedly designated to Andrew Quarless last season, but he unfortunately got injured and was placed on the reserve list.

The eight-year veteran's contract is broken down to the following: a $2.75 million deal plus $900,000 in incentives, leading to a possible max amount of $3.65 million. USA Today Sports previously reported that the team actually offered him a two-year deal but the parties couldn't agree on the amount, so the one-year deal was put in writing, with the incentives serving as the clincher.

Aside from the Packers, Cook also supposedly received interest from several other teams, including Chicago, Atlanta, and Carolina. The third round selection by the Tennessee Titans in the 2009 NFL Draft was a college football star at South Carolina. He will be joining Green Bay after three productive years with the St. Louis Rams.

Cook's job with the Packers is most probably going to be providing that much needed help at the offensive side. He will be competing for a spot on the top of the depth chart and if ever he becomes a consistent recipient for Aaron Rodgers, he may well be staying here for good. The fact is Cook never has played with a top-caliber quarterback like Rodgers, so it should be interesting to see how he reacts when given more opportunities in offense.
