Nicki Minaj 'Irked' by Lady Gaga Comparisons
Nicki Minaj has opened up about the media's frequent comparisons of her own style to that of Lady Gaga.
When asked about the comparisons to the "Born This Way" singer during an interview with ABC's "Nightline," Minaj replied, "Offend me? No. Irks me? Yeah."
While both singers have roots in New York City, the "Super Bass" singer pointed out a few key differences between herself and Lady Gaga.
"First of all, I'm a rapper," stated the 29-year-old. "I'm from southside Jamaica, Queens. I could say some really crazy lyrics right now, but I won't."
Both artists display a flair for unusual, bright clothing and incorporate sometimes provocative imagery in their music. It has also been noted that both singers also regularly use wigs in their costumes.
"Wigs," Minaj retorted. "Every female in this game wears wigs. Over-the-top costumes? Ehh try again. It's getting tired now though, to me."
Minaj went on to explain that when the comparisons first began between herself and Gaga, she was understanding and assumed the media would eventually stop.
"Gaga is a fantastic artist," noted Minaj. "She's paved her way. She's opened her own lane. But I feel like I have my own lane, and we never cross, ever!"
While Minaj respects Gaga's work, she continued, "I really don't get the comparison anymore. Our music doesn't sound the same. Out stage presence is not the same. I just can't see the similarities."
Born Onika Tanya Maraj, the Trinidadian-born singer is classically trained in music. Minaj graduated from LaGuardia High School which specialized in music and the visual and performing arts, where she participated in the drama program.
After signing a record deal in 2009 with Young Money Entertainment which was founded by rapper Lil Wayne, Minaj went on to become a Platinum artist.
