Nicole Scherzinger: 'I Won't Sell My Soul to the Devil for A Grammy'
Nicole Scherzinger, singer-songwriter and television personality, says perhaps the reason she has yet to receive some of the entertainment industry's most coveted awards is because she refuses to sell her soul to the devil.
Scherzinger, 34, rose to popularity as a singer in groups like Eden's Crush and The Pussycat Dolls. However, she recently spoke out about some of the downsides of fame, including compromising moral standards to get ahead.
"This is such a tough industry, you know. To make it, you really have to sell your soul to the devil ... I haven't," Scherzinger recently told The Independent U.K. "That's probably why I haven't quite reached the top of my mountain. I mean, where's my Tony Award, my Grammy, my Oscar? Why don't I have any of those things yet?"
While the pressure to maintain fame can be exhausting, Scherzinger told the publication that she still believes it is all a blessing.
"It can feel a little stifling sometimes, perhaps, but mostly I have to look at all this as a blessing," she said. "It's what I always wanted. So I'm not going to sit here and complain about it, am I?"
The singer was born in Hawaii and reveals that she did not come from a family of entertainers. To her, God's will may have brought her into the limelight.
"No one else in my family was creative, a performer," Scherzinger explained. "Maybe it was God's will? I just knew that it was going to happen. The moment I heard Whitney Houston sing, I realized that that was what I was going to do as well."
The singer, who comes from a conservative Roman Catholic family, said her family accepts her music and that she no longer feels the need to explain her material to people.
"With these kind of songs, I don't feel I have to justify myself to anyone. I come from the most religious family– my grandfather is a priest– and if they support me in all this, and they do, then I'm OK," she told The Independent. "I'm being sassy and classy; I'm having fun. I'm not coming from a dark place."
Scherzinger is gearing up to release her sophomore studio album this year and recently released her first single off the project titled "Boomerang."
