'Nidhogg 2' Release Date, Features and Updates: Upcoming Game Confirmed for 2017 Release; Gameplay and Visual Improvements Detailed
The hit side-scrolling fighting video game "Nidhogg" is confirmed to be getting a sequel and new improvements have already been detailed.
"Nidhogg 2" Release Details
The sequel would be aptly named "Nidhogg 2" and will feature a lot of upgrades from the original game version. The successful 2D fencing game follow up is currently in development.
Independent game developer Mark "Messhof" Essen has stated that "Nidhogg 2" is slated for a 2017 release. It will then be available for Mac and Windows PC, similar to the original iteration. Support for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita is still unconfirmed, but it is noteworthy that the first installment released compatible versions to these gaming consoles. Other gaming platforms such as the Xbox One may also support the game in the future.
Improved Visual Style
The teaser trailer for "Nidhogg 2" (shown below) showcases a very different visual style compared to the original game. The first released installment featured characters that were rendered in solid bright colors and flat, two-dimensional sprites. They then somehow appear to be silhouettes. The background and environment seemed very simple and somehow pixelated.
In contrast, the "Nidhogg 2" showcases a modern aesthetic that seemingly pays tribute to the retro 16-bit visual style. The characters are now more nuanced and are given more depth in regards to their visual representation.
Gameplay Upgrades
Aside from the overhauled details in the environment, aesthetics, and animations, "Nidhogg 2" will also bring new gameplay features to its arsenal. There would be more than 10 levels of fencing battles.
The single player mode, opposing various AI opponents, would also be featuring special challenge rounds. Lastly, to further expand the world of "Nidhogg 2", there would be local and online multiplayer and tournament modes so playing the game does not have to be confined within the game itself.
Other Details and TwitchCon Demo
Messhof himself would be performing the game design and art direction of "Nidhogg 2". The lead artist and animation handler would be Toby Dixon. Deal-making and music direction would be at the hands of Kristy Norindr. Finally, the soundtrack would be featuring the music of Mux Mool, Daedelus, Dose One and other artists.
"Nidhogg 2" will be playable at the Indie District in TwitchCon 2016. It will be available in Booth 104. The entire convention itself runs from September 30 to October 2 in San Diego. There would also be an Indie Stage live stream that would be providing the first look at "Nidhogg 2" on October 1.
