Nintendo Miitomo Has Been Downloaded 3 Million Times Worldwide
Nintendo's first mobile app, Miitomo, has proved to be really popular with users of mobile devices not only its home country but also in the rest of the world. Roughly two million users have been added to its user base when it released in the West.
Less than a day after it launched in the United States, the United Kingdom, and a number of other countries, Nintendo UK revealed in a tweet that the app has reached a new milestone. Miitomo has been downloaded by three million users, including the one million users who already downloaded the app when it launched in Japan.
"#Miitomo has reached 3 million users worldwide!" Nintendo UK shared on Twitter. "Thanks for your support & enjoy the app with your friends!"
Miitomo is described as a communication app or a new type of social network which features the Nintendo character called Miis. Users create their own Miis, which are fully animated avatars, and customize them as they wish. The app asks users questions on a wide range of subjects, their answer to which are then shared with friends. The app also allows users to take silly photos like these.
The app is the first of five planned smartphone apps, which Nintendo will create in collaboration with developer DeNA. Reviews describe the app as staying true to the Nintendo experience, which is exactly what Nintendo was aiming at. But more than that, Miitomo marks a significant shift in Nintendo's video game strategy. The company, which is known for being protective of its IPs, has made the app available to a wide user base, namely iOS and Android users.
Nintendo's Miitomo launched first in Japan before heading West to the U.S. and the UK on March 31. Those interested can download the app from iTunes or Google Play.
