Nintendo Switch Becomes Company's Fastest Selling Console
Nintendo's newest console has been selling out from various retailers, and there is a preliminary announcement from Nintendo of America president, Reggie Fils-Aime, that the Nintendo Switch has already surpassed the company's historical record for sales in the first two days in the Americas.
A series of tweets from New York Times reporter Nick Wingfield noted how unprecedented the Nintendo Switch launch turned out to be, given that the console debuted in March and not before the end-of-year holidays. On his tweets dated March 6, Wingfield is passing along news from Nintendo of America president Fils-Aime in a recent interview.
According to Fils-Aime, as shared by Wingfield, the Friday and Saturday sales for the Nintendo Switch have just exceeded the first two-day sales figure for any Nintendo console launch in the Americas. The record was previously held by the Nintendo Wii.
Another record has been broken by the Zelda title that launched with the Nintendo Switch. The title "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" has also become the best-selling standalone (not bundled, like "Wii Sports") launch game in Nintendo history.
For now, the company has not yet made any statement related to the console's worldwide sales performance. The announcement by Fils-Aime only covers the Americas region, which includes the United States, Canada, Mexico and Latin America.
A report by The Telegraph indicates that a company spokesperson made the confirmation that sales in Europe for the Nintendo Switch are at a record high as well, bolstering the case for the new console as the fastest-selling Nintendo unit worldwide in the company's history.
Official sales numbers will be revealed when Nintendo does its full-year financial results, according to The Telegraph. This data, which is expected by the end of April, will give a definitive idea on how much the new console has broken through past records set by its predecessors.
