Nintendo Switch Jailbreak Rumors: Notorious Hacker Suggests New Console May Be Jailbroken
According to its manufacturer, the Nintendo Switch console that was released recently has a locked down operating system, making it invulnerable to hackers. However, a recent tweet from a notorious hacker suggests that may not actually be the case.
Recently, rumors have been going around that the new Nintendo Switch might actually be forced to bend. According to the tweet of iOS jailbreaker qwertyoruiop, the new console can be hacked using a special software. The tweet reportedly comes with a photo which, when zoomed in, reveals software named Pangu. However, SlashGear reported that it cannot be confirmed if the photo is true and if the software really works.
Meanwhile, another hacker known as LiveOverflow also recently posted a video explaining how the Nintendo Switch can be jailbroken. According to the hacker, the crack is based on the same jailbreak tool that had previously worked on iOS 9.3.x, since both the Nintendo Switch and the Apple mobile operating system have something in common.
However, qwertyoruiop later explained via Twitter that he did not jailbreak the Nintendo Switch but simply suggested that it could be jailbroken. "Just to be clear: I did not jailbreak the Switch. I simply demonstrated a proof of concept exploit that gives me code exec in the browser," he said.
Both LiveOverflow and qwertyoruiop reportedly took advantage of the vulnerability of an unpatched WebKit in jailbreaking the Switch. The outdated version of the said portal had a loophole which the hackers found to have been previously patched by the iOS 9.3.x. According to the qwertyoruiop, however, the code exec is a viable starting point for further research but that cannot be enough to totally jailbreak the Switch.
According to reports, the attempt to jailbreak the Nintendo Switch can be considered as the first attempt towards converting the Switch into an Android gaming device.
