Nintendo Wii U to Come With its Own App Store

Nintendo’s upcoming next generation console, the Wii U, will come with its own updated application store, according to a recent article in The Telegraph.

This new app store is expected to go “far beyond” anything that is currently available on the online stores for the Nintendo Wii and DSi consoles. Anyone with a Wii U can use apps that operate on the Wii U itself such as MLB.TV, and others that will run exclusively on the device’s controller.

The new system is expected to launch sometime in the second half of 2012. The Wii U’s controller will be a tablet style device and will feature a 6.2-inch screen. This would allow the console to run a variety of different apps with two separate screens. The controllers display will also allow users to continue playing a game once their television is turned off.

The Telegraph also reported that Nintendo has not yet revealed if it will use the same points system for purchasing apps that it currently uses on the Wii and DS consoles. The company may decide to go with a more pay-to-play system that is used by Apple.

It is also unclear whether or not this new Wii U app store will allow third-party developers to submit their own apps into the market the same way Apple and Google markets do.

The Wii U will follow up the original Nintendo Wii console that was released in 2006 and allowed the video game giant to enjoy much success. The console will feature high-definition graphics, which is a significant upgrade for the Wii that has the same graphic capabilities as the PS2, GameCube and original Xbox.
