Nintendo's Miiverse Social Network Going Down: How to Save User Posts

The Miiverse will be gone in less than two months, taking with it countless doodles, screenshots and messages from Nintendo fans. To help users cope with the loss, the company is offering a download service that lets Miiverse members get a copy of their post history.

On Aug. 28, Nintendo announced that they are closing down Miiverse, their social network platform for the Wii U, 3DS and web browsers. On Nov. 8, at 1 a.m. EDT, Miiverse posts and messages will be inaccessible from consoles, browsers or smart devices. Games for the Wii U and 3DS that make use of or support Miiverse functionalities will likewise stop being able to support these features on that day.

Thousands of fan scribbles, quotes and game screens that has been a part of many Wii U and 3DS players are now at risk of disappearing. To help users recover what they can before the service expires in two months, Nintendo is offering a limited-time service to request a post history download.

This feature is now available at the Miiverse website, with a new button at the top saying "Information on Downloading your Post History." Clicking this link takes users to the download request service, which they must use before Miiverse goes down on Nov. 8.

A Nintendo Account is, of course, needed for this, and it must be linked to the Nintendo Network ID. Availing of the service lets members download all their posts and any screenshots they have saved to their albums to their PC.

Not all users may still be interested in saving their posts, and thousands of beautiful fan art are at risk of being deleted forever once the service ends in November. To this end, Tim Miller started an effort to archive all public posts from the Miiverse network.

"Any time a social network goes down, we lose a ton of data," Miller shared with Ars Technica via chat.

"Part of history, our culture, is lost. In Miiverse, especially in the art section, you can see people really investing a lot of their time and energy in it. And being able to save that for others to see and experience is extremely important," he added.
