Nokia N1 Android Tablet: Specs, Features, Price, Release Date
Nokia is launching an Android-powered tablet, which marks the company's return to consumer electronics.
Microsoft bought Nokia's phone business for $7.2 billion and announced that it was dropping both the Nokia and Windows Phone brand names in October in favor of just using Lumia.
Nokia said that they are not making the N1 themselves, but has licensed its brand, design and software to a third party—Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn. The Finnish company has started licensing its name, expertise and technology to other companies this quarter.
The gadget was announced at the Slush technology conference in Helsinki by head of products at Nokia Technologies Sebastian Nystrom.
"This is a great product for Nokia fans and everyone who has not found the right Android tablet yet," said Nystrom.
The tablet, which is touted to give the iPad Mini a run for its money, measures 7.9 inches and is backed by an aluminum frame. It is 6.9mm thick, has 32GB of storage, 8MP rear facing and 5MP front facing cameras, and a microSD slot. It will be powered by a 2.4GHz quad-core Intel Atom processor and run on the Android Lollipop.
It runs Nokia's own Z Launcher skin on top of Android. The software allows owners to draw letters on the tablet's screen with one of their fingers to search for related to content and change the apps presented on the device's home screen according to the time of day and the device's location.
One thing it can't do is make calls, as part of Nokia's recent deal with Microsoft, the company is not allowed to use its branding on smartphones until 2016, and on feature phones until 2024.
The N1 will be launched in China in February 2015, followed by Russia. The tablet will be available in Natural Aluminium and Lava Grey, and priced at $249.
