N'Sync VMA Performance Was 'To Support Justin,' Band Mate Says
While the N'Sync reunion at the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony may have thrilled fans, member Chris Kirkpatrick wanted to make sure that everyone knows it was not the start of a tour but rather a "one time thing" to honor fellow band mate Justin Timberlake.
During an interview with the radio show "Johnny's House," Kirkpatrick discussed what it meant for the five men to be together again and their decision to perform together after seven years apart.
"This was for Justin to get the Video Vanguard Award," Kirkpatrick said. "It was funny because all of us getting back together, we remembered what we love about each other and what we hate about each other. It was just a bit of fun."
"Honestly, when he [Timberlake] talked to us, I thought we were just coming out with mic stands and singing, and when I came home from rehearsals my girl's like, 'Why are you drenched?' I'm like, I'm too old for this,'" Kirkpatrick revealed.
The reunion was kept a surprise until the last minute, and fans were uncertain whether or not it would actually happen. Timberlake was the star of the night, taking home the Video Vanguard Award, which has been awarded to The Beatles, Madonna, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, and U2, among other legends.
It was a huge night for Timberlake, but the N'Sync crew was united in the message that the group was not getting back together beyond the MTV performance.
"No… it was just about five guys who were great friends who spent 10 or 15 years together touring and we wanted to give that back to our fans, but we were there mainly to support Justin," J.C. Chasez told Ryan Seacrest.
"This was the first time we had a rehearsal together in 10 years, so everyone was going, 'Can we go through this one more time slowly?' so that part was pretty funny," Chasez joked, echoing Kirkpatrick's sentiment.
