Obama Administration Set to Unveil New Reforms in Gun Control

The Obama administration has revealed that it is ready to reform gun laws in the U.S. and will release its plans in the near future according to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz), involved in a shooting 6 months ago, is a casualty of the lack of current legislation involving the second amendment.

“The president directed the Attorney General to form working groups with key stakeholders to identify common sense measures that would improve American safety and security while fully respecting Second Amendment rights,” said Carney at Thursday’s briefing.

But in a republican run congress reformers are meeting difficulties passing new legislation for gun laws, resulting in no actual bill getting to congress, but rather executive orders and administrative actions, according to Carney.

Carney also stated that reforms can be expected in a matter of weeks, and that when they do come they will be the most comprehensive move on this issue from this administration since they began in 2008.

The horrors of the Gifford’s shooting inspired President Obama to pen an op-ed piece for the Arizona Daily Star touching on the need for stronger state to state coordination on collecting gun data, performing background checks and reinforcing the laws already in place.

A source close to the discussions in the administration confirmed that the reforms cover most issues President Obama spoke about in the op-ed, but that they are “not huge in scope.”

Among those issues covered in the reforms, legislation that would limit the size of a magazine was included, along with a bill that allows private sellers to conduct background checks at gun shows.

The Obama administration hopes to cut down gun violence with these reforms but not do away with the right to bear arms, which seems to be a tough task while issuing legislation on this topic.
