There is a certain amount of skepticism from many quarters surrounding this year's speech. It had been hopeful that Obama would fulfill promises to lower corporation tax rates and pass significant immigration reform last year, however, throughout 2013 the president was distracted by other priorities, and has also been unable to navigate his proposals through Congress successfully.

The Benghazi scandal, the botched Obamacare rollout, and NSA spying scandals have ensured that Obama is under more pressure than ever before approaching a State of the Union address.

Although Obama's focus on Tuesday night appears to be set clearly on income inequality and the economy, some reports claim that the president will touch upon past promises to oversee tighter gun controls.

Other topics from last year's SOTU speech, such as taxes and entitlement reform, could also struggle to get more than a mention in this year's speech as Obama looks to bring strong focus on creating more economic opportunities, and close the widening gap between the rich and poor.

It is believed Obama will look to implement more employee protections through 2014, and it has been widely reported he will sign an executive order increasing the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 for new federal contracts.

Obama will unveil plans to increase the federal wage to $10.10 over three years, and from then on indexing it to inflation.
