Obamas, Doug Emhoff extol Kamala Harris as source of hope, compassion

'Hey, it’s Douuuuugg'

Doug Emhoff delivered an emotional tribute to his wife of 10 years and recounted how he left an awkward morning voicemail for her following a blind date.

"Hey, it’s Douuuuugg," Emhoff said of the message he left on Harris' voicemail at 8:30 a.m. after their date.

"As I got to know her better, and just fell in love fast, I learned what drives Kamala. And it’s what you’ve seen over these past four years and especially these past four weeks," he said.

Emhoff went on to paint a picture of Harris as a compassionate person who fights bullies.

"She stands up to bullies, just like my parents taught me to," he said. "She likes to see people do well, but hates when they’re treated unfairly. She believes this work requires a basic curiosity and just how people are doing. Her empathy is her strength."

"Kamala was exactly the right person for me at an important moment in my life," he also said. "And at this moment in our nation’s history, she is exactly the right president."

Emhoff, who is Jewish, also noted how their family is blended and of different faiths. According to The Associated Press, Harris is a "Baptist with a Jewish husband and a faith that traces back to MLK and Gandhi."

"Hello to my big, beautiful, blended family up there," he said at the beginning of his remarks, indicating to where his parents, his first wife and their two children, Elle and Cole, were sitting.

Noting that blended families "can be a little complicated," he said "as soon as our kids started calling her 'Momala,' I knew we’d be OK."

Harris tweeted a photo of herself watching Emhoff's speech from her plane.

"Love you, Dougie," she wrote.
