Obi-Wan Kenobi Solo Film: 'Star Wars' Anthology Film Planned; Ewan McGregor to Reprise Role

"Star Wars" fans have been asking for an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off film for a long time. And based on a new report, it looks like their requests have finally been heard.

According to StarWarsNewsNet, Lucasfilm is apparently planning a solo film focusing on Obi-Wan. This does not really come as a surprise since the "Star Wars" universe is a vast one, and a Han Solo spin-off is already in the works. Regardless, the news is definitely enough to send fans into a frenzy.

A source close to Lucasfilm revealed the news to the publication. Another exciting revelation is that Ewan McGregor is expected to reprise his role.

"Kathleen Kennedy and the rest of Lucasfilm fully intend to make an Obi-Wan movie set between 'Revenge of the Sith' and 'A New Hope,' with Ewan McGregor in tow," the insider said. However, it is important to keep in mind that there will only be one film, which means there are no plans for sequels.

McGregor has previously expressed his interest in reprising the iconic role should he be asked. "I've been very open to say I'd be happy to do it if they want to do it," he told Business Insider in March.

According to StarWarsNewsNet, the source also revealed that Gareth Edwards is being considered to direct the standalone film. It can be recalled that Edwards helmed the first "Star Wars" anthology film, "Rogue One," which received high praise from critics and audiences alike. And while Edwards is expected to return to the director's chair, the writers and producers will be different.

The idea of an Obi-Wan solo film is certainly exciting. And if there is any truth to the rumor, then it is likely that an announcement will be made at the upcoming "Star Wars Celebration" in Orlando, Florida.

However, with other films currently on Lucasfilm's plate, the Obi-Wan standalone spin-off is scheduled for a 2020 premiere at the earliest.
