Occupy Wall Street Protests: Mark Ruffalo Adds to Star Power
Actor Mark Ruffalo has defended the Occupy Wall Street protest, calling it the “festival of decency” on his Twitter account.
“Peaceful Resistance. That is what changes the world. We must be peaceful. This movement #occupywallstreet is about decency,” Ruffalo posted on his Twitter account on Saturday after having attended the movement all week.
The movement in New York’s financial district started earlier last month and has attracted the nation’s attention. Protesting corporate greed, political corruption, “the influence money has over our representatives in Washington,” among other issues- hundreds are camping out in New York’s Zuccotti Park.

A protester told The Christian Post that they plan on remaining as long as it takes, saying they will “no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the one percent.”
Ruffalo first arrived to the protest on September 30, when he wrote on Twitter, “Just got home from #OccupyWallStreet demonstration in NYC. It was inspiring. So much kindness. So much belief in humanity.”
The 43-year-old Academy Award nominee has an extensive background in political activism, speaking out against the war in Iraq, the Bush Administration, and the Military Commissions Act of 2006.
Writing for the British publication, The Guardian, Ruffalo said, “Their message is clear and simple: get money out of the political process; strive for equality in taxation and equal rights for all regardless of race, gender, social status, sexual preference or age.”
“The 99 percent of us have paid a dear price so that one percent could become the wealthiest people in the world,” continued the actor. “We live with great injustices in the land of justice. We live with great lawlessness in the land of the law.”
Ruffalo urges readers to get involved in the movement in order to “regain your dignity and what you have worked for in the capitalist society,” and to attend demonstrations in major cities or use social media to contribute to the cause.
“Kudos to the fearless #KeithOlbermann for his coverage of #OccupyWallStreet. A beacon of light in the media morass,” Ruffalo wrote on Twitter his friend and political commentator.
Keith Olbermann, who hosts “The Countdown” on MSNBC, has been a main coverage source of Occupy Wall Street. Ruffalo recently accepted a position on the show as an official contributor.
Actress Susan Sarandon has also visited the demonstration, as well as filmmaker Michael Moore. Partisans of the movement are convening in many major cities across the United States, and hope to attract the attention of President Obama.
