October Observed as Christian Higher Education Month
Through a month-long observance, the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities hopes to raise awareness about the gains in Christian education as well as recognize alumni who have made great contributions to society.
October is Christian Higher Education month, and to celebrate its sixth year anniversary, the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities created a website that showcases how Christian colleges and their alumni are benefiting society.
The Washington-based CCCU began Christian Higher Education Month in 1999, and by 2003, Congress passed a House Resolution recognizing the campaign. Through the month-long observance, the CCCU hopes to raise awareness about the gains in Christian education as well as recognize alumni who have made great contributions to society.
Intentionally Christian colleges have made enormous gains in recent years impressive enrollment growth, higher academic scholarship, national recognition for overall quality which explains why our graduates are making a difference as they engage all sectors of society, said Bob Andringa, president of CCCU, in a press statement.
This year, 21 outstanding alumni from CCCU member institutions will be featured online. These scholars represent a wide cross-section of professions, including government and law, arts and entertainment, global impact, science and technology, and business. This outstanding alumni initiative began in 2002, and each year since then, CCCU member campuses have been nominating their alumni and providing a pool for the CCCU team to choose.
Any college can teach you how to earn a living. The added value of Christian higher education is that you learn skills and values as to how to live your life, said Congressman Roy Blunt (R-Mo), one of this years 21 selected alumni.
In addition to these CCCU-initiated efforts, dozens of Christian college campuses are scheduled to join in the national campaign.
The CCCU is a higher education association of more than 170 Christ-centered institutions around the world. There are 105 member campuses in North America, and 71 affiliate campuses from 24 countries around the world. The Councils mission is to advance the cause of Christ-centered higher education and to help its institutions transform lives by faithfully relating scholarship and service to biblical truth.
