Octomom's Mother Speaks Out: 'I Raised Her to be a Nice Little Girl'
Nadya Suleman's mother is speaking out for the first time about her daughter's situation and the possibility that she could serve time in jail if convicted of welfare fraud. Angela Suleman explained that taking in the 14 children would "kill her."
"I would get the best lawyer for this not to happen because I'm not young enough to take care of them, but of course I would help," Angela told Mail Online. "I would actually take money out of my retirement check and have someone help me. Nadya does have a nanny, but not that often because she's so poor."
News broke earlier this week that Nadya had failed to report nearly $30,000 in money she earned from starring in an adult video and performing in clubs. That constitutes welfare fraud and could earn her five years in jail; she is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow and will likely learn her fate then. But it remains to be seen what will happen to her 14 children. Angela told Mail Online that she had warned her daughter about her behavior and sources of income.
"I told her if she does that again, I won't talk to her anymore. I raised her to be a nice little girl. Some teenagers, they go sleep around or whatever to get attention. She never did that, so I just couldn't believe it. Yeah, she has no money," Angela said, "and she's trying her best. But I said, 'If you're that poor, I'll borrow money; I'll get a loan or something.'"
Nadya became an instant celebrity when she became pregnant with eight babies and already having six at home. She has always struggled with money and has bounced around from home to home due to financial problems. This is only the latest in a string of painful ordeals for the mother of 14.
Prosecutors will ask that Nadya's bail be set at $25,000, according to reports.
