Oculus Rift and Touch Bundle Now Permanently Priced at $399
Oculus has just announced that the base price for their basic bundle, which combines the Oculus Rift headset with the Oculus Touch controllers, will now start at the permanently reduced price of $399.
The Virtual Reality platform maker has announced that the new price of its Oculus Rift and Touch combo will now start at $399, getting it into a category that's actually lower than the high-end PC video cards needed to run the kit, as Engadget notes.
The same set also runs at £399 for the U.K. and EU markets, as well as making it a whole lot more affordable than competing offers like the HTC Vive, which still retails for about $600 as of this time. Price-wise, this offer from Oculus has gone down to competing with the more affordable headsets designed for Windows Mixed Reality.
Premium offers for Microsoft's new VR platform currently runs as much as $500 for higher-end models like the Samsung Odyssey, which is due to come out on Nov. 6. Competition from more affordable lines from makers like Samsung, Acer, HP and others are expected to come in the following months.
As recent as March this year, the Oculus Rift and Touch bundles sold for about $800, a hefty price for a company who claims to be trying to bring Virtual Reality to the mass market. The company began trying out price drops, starting with a $200 discount earlier this year.
It won't be until Oculus did a limited-time offer to drop the Rift and Touch bundle to below $400 will the company move a lot of units, though. The promo, which ran during the "Summer of Rift" event last July, dropped the cost of the kit down by another $200 from the introductory price.
The video below shows the Oculus Rift plus Touch bundle and its features, which is now available starting at $399. The bundle is now available at its new, lowered price at the VR platform's official website.
