Ogden, Utah Police Shooting: 1 Officer Killed, 5 Officers Wounded
Ogden, Utah authorities say a Utah police officer has died Thursday morning after a Wednesday night shootout that left a suspect and five other officers injured.
Officer Jared Francom died from bullet wounds he suffered during a drug-related shoot-out, Ogden police said in a statement. Five police officers still remain in the hospital with serious to critical injuries, according to CBS.
The suspect involved in the fatal shooting is under guard in a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, CBS reported.
Witnesses said they heard three sudden pops, a pause for several moments, and then a barrage of gunfire, according to CBS.
"We came running outside to see what was going on," a woman who lives nearby, Janessa Vanderstappen, told the Deseret News."Officers told us to go back in our house."
Vanderstappen told Deseret she heard shouting from her backyard and walked onto the back porch where she saw police talking to someone hiding nearby in a shed.
The shooting began a little before 9 p.m. on Wednesday when anti-drug police attempted to serve a search warrant to a home in a neighborhood in Ogden, CBS reported.
Police eventually surrounded the suspect near a backyard shed, The Standard-Examiner in Ogden reported. At 9:45 p.m., after an arrest was made and the home secured, police announced there was no longer a threat to the local community, the paper said.
From his porch, Mat Weinberger, who lives half a block from the scene of the shooting, told the Salt Lake Tribune he heard a voice on a police radio shouting that an officer was down. "Chaotic end to a quiet night," Weinberger said.
Officer Jared Francom is survived by his wife and two small children.
