'Once Upon a Time' Cast News, Update: Executive Producers Reveal Details About the Dark Emma Swan
In the upcoming fifth season of ABC's hit fantasy TV drama series "Once Upon a Time," fans will see Jennifer Morrison's Emma Swan entrapped with the powers of an ancient evil.
This came to pass when she, out of her inert heroism, sacrificed herself in the Season 4 finale for Regina (Lana Parrilla) so that the latter can get her happy ending.
"Every part of her is fighting her dark urges," executive producer Edward Kitsis said during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "What happens when [the darkness] mixes with the lightest magic of all, and will Emma have the strength to fight it?"
The publication was quick to point out as to how the now so-called Dark Swan, will differ from Robert Carlyle's Rumplestiltskin.
Showrunner Adam Horowitz, who was also asked by the media outlet, said that "How a Dark One manifests is specific to each person who takes on the mantle."
Horowitz clarified that "Emma will have her own unique spin on what it means to be a Dark One."
"Becoming the Dark One allows you to have the freedom to have no inhibitions," Kitsis told Entertainment Weekly.
"We are going to be exploring love and what happens when you use it as a weapon and what are the things that it makes you do. In the past, we've said love is the most powerful magic of all. It makes you do many things you normally wouldn't think you would," he added.
But will there be any hope for Emma to be redeemed from the Dark state she is expected to be found?
"The quest for Merlin is the quest to free Emma," Kitsis said. Merlin, who is one of the Camelot characters bound to debut in the TV series, will be joined by King Arthur (Liam Garrigan), Guinevere, and Lancelot (Sinqua Walls).
"Once Upon a Time" Season 5 premieres Sept. 27 on ABC.
