'Once Upon a Time' season 5 plot news: Ruby returns

A well-known character is expected to return for the upcoming fifth season of the ABC series "Once Upon a Time."

According to TVLine, actress Meghan Ory will return to the series to reprise her role as Ruby. It was confirmed by series creator Eddy Kitsis that she will be part of a multi-episode arc for the upcoming season.

Ruby is the series' portrayal of the character "Little Red Riding Hood," and was last seen in the third season. It was revealed that she is actually a werewolf. However, after the other citizens of Storybrooke accused her of murder, she left town.

The announcement of Ruby's return was revealed around the time of the release of the novel "Red's Untold Tale," the companion novel of the series' source material Once Upon a Time. The story is based on a teenage Red who has to deal with her responsibilities at home and in high school. The novel is expected to release on Sept. 22.

The synopsis for the upcoming premiere was also revealed. It explained that the premiere will have the characters working together to find Emma, after becoming "The Dark One." Several new characters are also expected to join the series in order to help look for Emma.

It reads, "Immediately after becoming the Dark One, Emma disappears and the heroes must band together to save her, but first they have to find her, which will require the help of an unlikely ally. Meanwhile, in the Enchanted Forest, Emma struggles to resist her dark urges as she searches for Merlin in the hope that he can stop her transformation. Along the way to Camelot, she gets help from the plucky and brave warrior princess Merida, as well as King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table."

Once Upon a Time season 5 is expected to release on Sept. 27.
