'Operation World' Prayer Encyclopedia Sells 90,000 Copies
The seventh edition of the highly-acclaimed prayer encyclopedia, Operation World, has sold over 90,000 copies in its first month, its publisher announced Friday.
Biblica, a ministry that provides God's word through translation, publishing and Bible engagement, applauded the strong sales. Collectively, all the Operation World editions have sold over 2.5 million copies.
"Since 2001 (sixth edition), God has been doing amazing things," said Jason Mandryk, author of Operation World, in a statement. "For example, hundreds of previously unengaged people groups now have believing communities in their midst. We've seen the growth of the mission sending movement from just about every corner of the Majority world and the emergence of a truly global evangelicalism."
Operation World is the definitive global prayer handbook that includes up-to-date information about every country in the world. The information is meant to help Christians understand the spiritual development and needs in every country to help guide their intercessory prayers.
Information in the book includes briefs about the country's geography, languages, economy, politics, religions and Christian denominations. It also includes challenges for prayer at the end of each country summary that help readers know what prayers the country needs based on reports from missionaries on the ground.
Christianity Today magazine includes Operation World on its list of "The Top 50 Books That Have Shaped Evangelicals."
"There is no book outside of the Bible that has had more of an effect on my own prayer life than Operation World," said David Platt, senior pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Ala., and author of the bestseller Radical: Taking Back You Faith from the American Dream.
"It just opens my eyes to the glory of God in the nations and the needs in the nations and the spread of the gospel in the nations," he said.
Platt's congregation of about 5,000 members has used the book over the past year to pray for every country.
Besides English, the book is translated into German, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Korean, Chinese, Russian, and in part into Indonesian and Italian. It took five years to put together the latest edition of OW.
