Oppo R7S Release Date, Specs Rumors: Is It The New Asian iPhone Killer?

The latest addition to Oppo's stable of R7 phones is here and early testers have noted its close resemblance to the iPhone 6S line from Apple.

The 5.5-inch Oppo R7S is outfitted in metal alloy and comes in gold, silver, and rose gold. Its build is slim at just 6.95 mm and it weighs just 155 grams. iPhone users will recognize the iPhone-esque design of this phone: the power and volume buttons, the camera, and the speakers all have the same placement as those of the iPhone 6S. Even its default wallpaper resembles that of iOS 8.

Though it resembles the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus well enough, whether or not the midrange R7S can lure smartphone users away from Apple's premium offering depends on what's under the hood. Qualcomm's Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor powers the phone, which has 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. The R7S features a 5.5-inch full-HD AMOLED display protected by Gorilla Glass 4, a 13-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. The phone is equipped with an embedded 3,070 mAh Li-Po battery and two micro-SIM slots, one of which can serve as a microSD card slot for extra storage.

The smartphone boots Color OS 2.1, Oppo's own version of the Android 5.1 Lollipop. It is similar to Samsung's TouchWiz and Xiaomi's MIUI. On Color, as on the iPhone and the iPad, all the apps are displayed on the home screen instead of being stashed away in a separate drawer. Oppo claims that the OS was designed to launch apps faster, though this is yet to be tested.

According to CNET, the R7S will hit stores in Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Australia before the end of the month. It will go up for sale online on oppostyle.com and on Amazon U.K., Germany, and France on Dec. 1. The R7S will retail for around $425.
