'Outlander' Season 2 Casting News: New Faces To Join Cast; Sam Heughan Talks About 'Tough Scenes'
Production for the second season of "Outlander," the American-British historical drama series, is currently in full swing. "Outlander" is based on the hit time travel series of the same name by author Diana Gabaldon.
The teaser for the much-anticipated Season 2 dropped last week and it showed a glimpse of what's in store for Claire Beauchamp Randall/Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in France. The minute-long promo video revealed Claire's pregnant belly, a battle scene, and the two lead characters visiting a grave. Based on the teaser, it appears that "Outlander" Season 2 will be full of action, intrigue, and fancier wardrobes as Jamie and Claire immerse themselves in French society.
Joining them in the new season are a bunch of new faces. According to TV Line, Oscar Kennedy (from the TV series "Hunted" and the movie "Toast") has been cast as Lord John William Grey. In the "Outlander" books, Grey is a young boy who believes that Claire is being held hostage and attempts to rescue her.
Meanwhile, Starz, the company that produces the series, has confirmed that Clive Russell (who played the role of Brynden "Blackfish" Tully in HBO's "Game of Thrones") will be joining the cast as Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat. In the novels, Lord Lovat, Jamie's grandfather, is called the Old Fox and is portrayed as a manipulative character who frequently clashes with Jamie.
Back in November, Heughan sent fans into a speculation frenzy after he tweeted about filming "some tough scenes and challenging conditions," calling it "dramatic stuff." This led many to believe that the cast and crew of "Outlander" were shooting an emotional scene from "Dragonfly in Amber," the second novel in Gabaldon's "Outlander" series.
The day before Heughan's tweet, Graham McTavish, who plays Dougal MacKenzie, also tweeted, saying that filming had been "messy, muddy madness." Readers of the novels have taken these social media posts to mean that the cast was filming the scene at the end of "Dragonfly in Amber" in which Jamie Fraser and Dougal MacKenzie face off, leading to MacKenzie's death.
According to a tweet by "Outlander" showrunner Ronald D. Moore, the second season will premiere in March or April 2016.
