Over 400 people baptized in one weekend at Colorado megachurch: ‘The harvest is plentiful’
A multisite Evangelical non-denominational megachurch in Colorado baptized more than 400 people over the course of one weekend, a new church record.
New Life Church of Colorado Springs, which averages approximately 9,000 worship attendees every weekend, baptized 419 people last weekend across multiple services.
New Life Pastor Brady Boyd told The Christian Post that the 419 professions of faith represent the most baptisms his church has had in its nearly 40-year history.
“There is an unprecedented spiritual hunger we are seeing in people,” Boyd said. “The world is a mess and people are seeking and searching for truth and meaning. We believe the harvest is plentiful and people are responding to the message of Jesus.”
Boyd told CP that each baptized individual “attended a baptism class prior to being baptized” and that there was going to be follow-up for those who came forward.
“Everyone will be contacted and encouraged to attend small groups and discipleship classes to grow in their faith,” he continued.
New Life has eight congregations meeting at six locations in the Colorado Springs area, including the Iglesia Nueva Vida congregation and a Chinese Church congregation.
“New Life Church proclaims the Nicene Creed as our statement of faith,” the church explains online. “This creed dates back to the fourth century, when Christians came together and composed this formative and definitive statement.”
“It is more than an intellectual checklist of doctrine; it is a confession of worship that forms us as the people of God and draws us together into the life of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.”
In recent months, multiple churches have reported large numbers of baptisms over the course of a single day or weekend.
For example, Last December, Upstate Church in South Carolina (also known as First Baptist Simpsonville), which has six campuses and around 7,000 members, baptized 141 people on one Sunday.
Of the 141 individuals, 86 had confirmed in advance that they wanted to be baptized, while 55 more had made the decision during the service when the church offered up an invitation.
Upstate Church Pastor Wayne Bray told CP that “we have never had spontaneous or mass baptisms before,” as the most baptisms his church had seen in a single day before was 35.
“I can’t adequately express how amazing it was to be a part of the day,” Bray said. “More than any other moment in my ministry, I felt like we were living the book of Acts. We had preached from Acts 2, and it seemed as if we were in the pages ourselves.”
In March, First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, Tennessee, baptized 93 people across four worship services in a single day. The people who were baptized reportedly had not planned to do so in advance.
“The 93 baptisms were spontaneous,” FBC Hendersonville Senior Associate Pastor Bruce Raley told CP. “Those people did not come prepared to be baptized that day, but we were prepared for them to be baptized that day and God just spoke and they were obedient.”
