According to Collider, Universal Pictures recently released a statement regarding the movie. It reads, "Legendary's Pacific Rim 2, originally scheduled for release on Aug. 4, 2017, will be redated at a later time. The filmmakers Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013's Pacific Rim, which generated more than $114 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim 2 so that the creative team can continue in its effort to exceed the amazing experience of the first film."

It was reported that the film's original date of release was taken by the hit movie franchise "Pitch Perfect 3." The movie was moved, in order to avoid competing with the upcoming Christopher Nolan film. There were previous reports hinting that the movie was canceled. However, director Guillermo del Toro addressed the rumors. He said, "We are still turning in some screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I'm concerned, it's not gone. We're still on it."
