'Pacific Rim 2' Release Date, Plot Rumors: Full Synopsis of Sequel Introduces New Protagonist

Fans of sci-fi and action film "Pacific Rim" finally get more details about the upcoming sequel, set to hit the cinemas next year.

Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures have released the full synopsis of "Pacific Rim: Uprising." As expected, the sequel will feature new characters led by Jake Pentecost (to be played by John Boyega), the son of Stacker (Idris Elba) who sacrificed himself to save humanity. The film will occur ten years after Stacker closed The Breach, the portal through which the kaiju were invading Earth. According to the spoilers, the events that took place in "Pacific Rim" are only a prelude to an all-out assault against humanity in "Uprising."

Jake is described as a rebellious man who was once a promising Jaeger pilot. Since his father's death, he abandoned his training and became caught up with the felons of the city's underworld. When a new threat surfaces, Jake will be forced to reconsider his choices. He meets his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), the leader of the new generation of pilots who are ready to defend the world against the enemy. Together, they will face a global uprising unlike anything humanity has experienced before.

Jake will be part of a skilled defense team comprised of a gifted rival pilot, Lambert (Scott Eastwood), and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker, Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny). Meanwhile, other stars included in the movie are Jing Tian, Adria Arjona, and Levi Meaden. According to Screen Rant, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman are also set to reprise their roles as kaiju scientists Dr. Newton Geiszler and Hermann Gottlieb.

Previously, Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures released several posters for the upcoming sequel. There was one with Eastwood's character standing on front of a Jaeger suit while holding his helmet. Another poster showed the film's slogan, "Rise Up," where a black silhouette of Boyega's Jake was shown in stark contrast with a Jaeger's golden hand.

"Pacific Rim: Uprising" will hit the cinemas on March 23, 2018. It is directed by Steven DeKnight.
