Pamela Anderson Shark Fin Ban: Actress Asks British Columbia to Outlaw Products
Pamela Anderson has urged officials in British Columbia to pass a new pact to outlaw shark fin products.
The former "Baywatch" actress is urging city officials from her native British Columbia to completely ban the practice, saying it disgusts her that sharks would be killed just to satisfy man's need for an expensive delicacy.
She is asking that the officials sign a new Canadian pact to outlaw shark fin products in the hope that it will help stop the hunting and killing of sharks.
Anderson has already previously praised Toronto councilors for voting last year to ban menu items like shark fin soup. She now wants other cities to follow that example when the legislation comes into effect next month.
She has said, "Hooking sharks, pulling them from the water, cutting off their fins while they are still alive, then dumping them back into the ocean to suffer and die is appalling. To do so for a bowl of soup is indefensible," according to GlobalToronto.com.
Anderson is a vegan, an advocate for animal rights, and an active member of the animal protection organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), taking part in several campaigns for animal rights. She became a vegetarian in her early teens when she saw her father cleaning an animal he had hunted.
She has also campaigned against seal hunting in Canada. In March 2006, Anderson asked to speak to Prime Minister Stephen Harper about the annual seal hunt but she was refused. In May 2006, she petitioned random individuals on the street for their opinion on the Canadian Seal Hunt.
She also became a company spokesperson for FrogAds, Inc. in March 2012
